The Subaru Forester has finally come of age, you could say it is something rather pleasing on the eye now. The old boxy shape is out, being replaced with a two-box design, it's larger inside and out, and has a sense of poise and balance. It offers a seamless all wheel drive system and car like performance.

Compared to the previous model, the new Forester is 110mm taller and 45mm wider, and its wheelbase has been expanded by 90mm, while off- road capability is further improved by better approach and departure angles coupled with a generous 220mm minimum ground clearance (225mm on the turbo XT).

The new Forester is as big inside as it seems outside, with more rear-seat space and a huge improvement in headroom. Subaru says the Forester's rear occupants enjoy 106mm more legroom than before and it seems every bit of that. While the load floor is a tad shorter with the seats up than before, less intrusive rear suspension means that usable luggage space is improved as well.

The new Forester will have two engines to choose from. The basic unit will be a 126kW 2.5 litre SOHC injected unit, while a Turbo XT version will satisfy the hoons among us with an additional 43kW of power, 17 inch alloys and a tell-tale letterbox slot in its bonnet to provide air for its intercooler. The Turbo version also has great fuel ratings and consumption is a low 10.5ltr per 100km.

On the road or off it, the Forester feels well-planted with constant all wheel drive and the boxer engine's low centre of gravity. It is the perfect sized mid-SUV.
