The new Holden Ute is no ordinary ute. These days the Holden hard-working rural ute is a big-engined two-seater sportscar with a tray out the back, owned primarily by blokey males who see themselves as Road Warriors.

The new VE ute is built on the long-wheelbase WM platform that is used for the current Statesman and Caprice sedans, so it is longer than a standard Commodore. Everything from the nose to the B-pillar is identical to the WM sedans.

It's a real looker, with a coupe-like silhouette complete with the traditional Holden ute sail at the point between the cabin and the tray, and a strong character line running the entire length of the bodyshell. Special features of the rear end are unique wrap-around tail lights, fully concealed tailgate hinges and a number plate that is centrally located.

The ute's interior is all VE Commodore, apart form a freshly designed area behind the seats that has opened up an additional 90 litres of load space.

The base Omega ute is powered by Holden's Australian built 180kw 3.6L Alloytec engine and one omission of air-conditioning. Next up is the SV6 with a higher output 195kW V6, this ute also has 18 inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust, air conditioning, and a sports fascia identical to that aboard the V6 sedan. The SS boasts Holden's Gen 4 V8 which offers 270kW of power and 530Nm of torque.
